Multi-Country

Some parts of Asia make more sense seen together than apart. The Mekong flows through Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam long before it recognises the lines drawn across it, and the same is true of the old trade routes, the shared food traditions, and the empires that once stretched across what are now four or five separate countries. Travellers who follow those threads tend to understand each place a little better for having seen where it connects.

The classic version of this is Cambodia and Vietnam: the temples of Angkor giving way, a few days later, to the river life of the Mekong Delta and the energy of Ho Chi Minh City. Add Laos and Thailand to the mix and the shift becomes more pronounced again, from the quiet, unhurried pace of Luang Prabang to the hill country of northern Thailand and on to Bangkok. Cross by boat, by road, or occasionally by bicycle, and the change in landscape and rhythm becomes part of the story rather than a gap between two separate holidays.

Not every crossing is about proximity. Seoul and Vietnam, or Japan and Korea, make an entirely different kind of pairing, built less on shared geography than on food, craft, and the pleasure of comparing two distinct culinary cultures back to back. It is a reminder that the region rewards curiosity more than it rewards a tidy itinerary.
