Arrive in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage town and the cultural heart of Laos, where a guide and driver will be waiting to transfer you to the hotel. Begin at the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum, filled with royal relics and religious art, before continuing to Wat Mai, known for its gilded bas-relief, and Wat Sensoukharam, with its dazzling gold facade. Finish the temple circuit at Wat Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang's most revered temple, celebrated for its ornate carvings and mosaics. Nearby, an optional visit can be made to a sanctuary caring for Asiatic black bears rescued from poachers, before continuing to the Lao Buffalo Dairy Farm, the only buffalo dairy in Laos. Head into the countryside for a full immersion into Laotian daily life, staying the night with a homestay family in the village of Muang Soune, nestled between mountains, the Nam Ou River and rice fields. Settle in with the host family and, depending on the season and the village's own rhythms, join in with whatever the day brings: shopping at the local market, fishing with a local fisherman, planting or harvesting rice, bathing in the river, or even a wedding party, should one be underway. A traditional Baci blessing ceremony can also be arranged as an optional addition. Disembark at Sopkhong Village to learn about the daily life of the ethnic Khmu people, then trek through farmland and rice paddies into the jungle to reach the limestone pools of Tad Mok Waterfall, where lunch is served beside the falls. After breakfast overlooking the karst mountains and the Nam Ou River, set off for Pakbeng. The drive offers a scenic glimpse into rural Laos, winding past limestone karst formations and rice paddies, with opportunities to stop in villages along the way. Cross the Mekong by longtail boat to the Mekong Elephant Park, a certified sanctuary dedicated to elephant conservation and education, where elephants are never ridden or made to perform. Walk guided trails through the forest to meet the elephants in their natural environment, observing their movements and interactions up close, then watch them bathe in the river before learning about the park's veterinary and positive-reinforcement training routines from its staff. Finish with the chance to feed the elephants fruit and vegetables, before lunch at the park's restaurant in a charming traditional setting and the boat ride back across the river. Board a traditional longtail boat for a slow cruise down the Mekong back to Luang Prabang, with a buffet lunch served onboard as the scenery unfolds. Stop first at a Hmong village to see the traditional production of rice alcohol, then continue to the Pak Ou Caves, known locally as Tam Ting, where thousands of gold-lacquered Buddha statues, ranging from a few centimetres to life-size, are set into towering limestone cliffs and remain a revered site of local pilgrimage. Explore the village and its daily rhythms, including a visit to a local knife smith still using generations-old techniques, with the chance to try the craft firsthand. Continue to a Khmu family's home for a traditional lunch served in the garden, and learn about animism, the belief system practised by many of Laos's ethnic minorities, along with how the local rice wine, Lao Hai, is made. In the afternoon, walk through rice paddies with the guide to a cave on the far side of the river, passing farmers at work in the fields, before a final rest in a rice hut to sample the rice wine and talk over the role agriculture plays in Laotian life. Enjoy a free morning in Vang Vieng before transferring to the train station for the onward journey to the capital, Vientiane. On arrival, begin a half-day guided tour of the city, starting at Wat Sisaket, known for its thousands of miniature Buddha statues, and Wat Phra Keo, home to a collection of Lao and Khmer religious art. Learn about Laos's colonial history at the Presidential Palace, then visit the COPE Centre to understand the lasting impact of unexploded ordnance from the Vietnam War era and the work being done to support survivors. Take in the views from the top of the Patuxay monument, then finish at That Luang, Vientiane's holiest site. Overnight in Vientiane.
