Set off early this morning by jeep to Ta Prohm, arriving just before it opens at 7:30am to have the temple to yourself before the crowds. Built between the mid-twelfth and early thirteenth centuries in honour of King Jayavarman VII's mother, Ta Prohm remains largely as it was found, still overgrown by jungle. Continue to Preah Khan, built for the king's father and less visited and less restored than its famous counterpart, offering an even more atmospheric feel. After a midday break, head into Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire, to visit Bayon temple. Continue to the APOPO visitor centre to learn about the organisation's work clearing landmines from the Cambodian countryside using specially trained rats. In the afternoon, explore the capital by remork with an expert from the Khmer Architecture Organisation, focused on the city's buildings from the 1950s and 60s, when architects fused traditional Khmer design with European, Russian and American influences to create what's now known as New Khmer Architecture, a style adapted to Cambodia's tropical climate and only recently recognised as a milestone in Khmer culture.
