Laos is the country that travellers consistently say they wished they had spent more time in. It is the least visited of its neighbours, largely because it asks more of you. The roads are slower, the towns are quieter, and the experience of being there rewards patience in a way that busier destinations simply cannot.
Luang Prabang is the obvious starting point, a UNESCO-listed town where saffron-robed monks still collect alms at dawn and the Mekong moves past temple-covered hills at the pace of a place that has decided not to hurry. But Laos extends well beyond it. The limestone karst scenery around Vang Vieng, the ancient capital of Vientiane, the remote villages of the north, and the four thousand islands of the far south offer a country of considerable variety for those willing to look.
