Japan

Go slowly. It rewards you for it.

Most people arrive in Japan expecting to be impressed, and they are, but rarely by what they anticipated. The country operates at a standard and a quietness that takes a little time to adjust to, and once you have, it is genuinely hard to shake. Precision, calm, an attention to detail that runs through everything from the food to the train timetables. It is a place that makes an impression and then keeps making it.

The well-known route between Tokyo and Kyoto is a fine starting point, but the country opens up considerably once you venture beyond it. There are mountain towns, fishing villages, and ryokan that barely register on the international radar, and they tend to be where Japan makes its strongest impression.

Two weeks here is not enough. Most people come back.
